Endemit label boss MMali returns with his sophomore EP, Don’t Forget to Go Home, a four-track trip through the wee hours of the club. His productions conjure a dancefloor locked into a mesmeric groove: glass-eyed ravers, running on low serotonin and stubborn momentum, refuse to call it a night as the first rays of sunlight begin to leak through tinted windows.
On Don’t Forget to Go Home, the Slovenian producer sharpens his vision of atmospheric techno first mapped out on his debut EP, Issun-boshi. The tracks are deceptively stripped-back, with tension accumulating through minute shifts in texture, percussion and tone. MMali’s approach is less about maximal impact than pressure, space and finesse.
‘Common Ground’ drifts between deep reverie and existential dread, its metallic percussion and effervescent textures suspended around a mysterious bassline. ‘What Lies Below’ slips into a state of subaquatic trance, its weightless pulse recalling the sensory blur of an isolation tank. The title track is built for the final stretch: a closing-time victory lap that gathers momentum as the lights come up, moving from primordial darkness towards something almost celestial.
The EP also includes a remix by Efdemin, one of minimal techno’s most cherished protagonists and a longstanding influence on MMali. His rework of ‘Don’t Forget to Go Home’ pares the track back into a taut, hypnotic groove, applying his trademark control of space, repetition and atmospheric pressure.
