The older you get, the smaller the world grows.
The innocence of the youth crew
stayed behind somewhere in the rearview mirror.
Back when you first winked at Bojan in the back row.
The sparking glances of those first teenage years.
Backs still unbent.
The enrolment form for uni, filled out,
that triumphant mug when the driving licence
landed in your hands.
The question then: could anything still stop you?
A few years on, it seems plenty can.
Work, balance sheets, or the government
when they nearly ban your parties.
Life's built so — lucky for us —
you can only give up once it's over.
Deserters of adult life, gather now,
on half-board from our youth,
scarf round the neck, a sparkler in hand.
The youth community will slowly be just a term
taught in an elective at the last analog school.
The real escape is always backward, never forward.
There, where for the first time you choose
between girls, competitiveness and ego.
Too long you've carried too heavy a rucksack —
so take only the light things along for the road.
The expedition goes its own way.
